Water Treatment Plants:
Function as clarifiers to remove flocs after coagulation, producing clear drinking water.
Wastewater Treatment Plants:
Used in primary sedimentation tanks (to settle suspended solids from influent) and secondary sedimentation tanks (to separate microbial flocs after biological treatment with activated sludge), as well as for thickening surplus sludge.
Stringent Effluent Quality:
As clarifiers, the key performance indicator is the turbidity of the overflow, which must meet extremely low standards (e.g., drinking water standards).
Handling of Light Flocs:
Flocs such as biological sludge are lightweight and fluffy, with settling characteristics different from mineral particles. This requires optimized hydraulic design.
Hygiene and Cleanliness:
Particularly in potable water applications, equipment must meet hygienic design standards (e.g., no dead zones, easy cleaning).
Oil and Algae Removal:
Specific designs (e.g., sedimentation thickeners) may also include surface skimming and oil removal functions.
