Function and Purpose of Thickeners

Aug 29,2025

thickener is a solid-liquid separation device based on the principle of gravity sedimentation. Its core functions can be summarized as follows:

Concentration:

Through gravity sedimentation, a low-density slurry (or sludge) is separated to remove most of its water content, resulting in a high-density underflow slurry. This is its primary function.

Clarification:

While solids settle, clear overflow water with extremely low solid content is obtained. This water can be recycled or discharged in compliance with environmental standards.

Detailed Functional Introduction:

Increasing Product Concentration:

Prepares materials for subsequent processes. For example, in concentrators, the slurry after flotation has a very low density. Direct smelting or filtration would be extremely costly. After thickening, the load and energy consumption of filtration equipment are significantly reduced.

Water Resource Recovery:

The clarified overflow water is returned to the process for reuse, greatly reducing fresh water consumption, lowering production costs, and meeting environmental protection requirements.

Storage and Buffering:

The conical or raked area at the bottom of the thickener can store a certain amount of concentrated material, providing a buffering and regulating function for the production process and ensuring stable feed to downstream equipment.

Environmental Protection:

In wastewater treatment, thickeners are used to purify sewage, ensuring effluent meets discharge standards. In mining, they prevent fine particles in tailings wastewater from being directly discharged, thereby reducing environmental pollution.
