Application of Thickeners in the Metallurgical Industr

Alumina Production:

Used for the separation and washing of red mud. This is a critical step in the alumina production process, directly impacting caustic soda recovery and alumina yield.

Hydrometallurgical Zinc/Nickel/Cobalt Extraction:

Employed in neutralization precipitation, as well as the thickening and washing of leach residues.

Gold Smelting:

Used for washing after cyanide leaching (CCD process – Counter-Current Decantation thickeners).

Extreme Corrosiveness:

The processed materials are often highly acidic or alkaline. For example, red mud is strongly alkaline, while some leach solutions are highly acidic. As a result, equipment materials must offer extremely high corrosion resistance. Commonly used materials include stainless steel (e.g., 316L, 2205 duplex steel), rubber-lined carbon steel, or special alloys.

High-Temperature Operations:

In some metallurgical processes, the slurry temperature is elevated, requiring equipment structures, seals, and materials to withstand heat.

Washing Efficiency:

In the CCD process, multiple thickeners are connected in series. There are precise requirements for overflow water quality (clarity) and washing efficiency (i.e., the loss of solubles carried away by the underflow).
